The 6th Annual Scarecrow Contest takes place this Friday, October 6th.  Judges will be out and about Friday afternoon and winners will be announced that evening.  For the second year in a row, there will be a Vegetable Creation Contest held at the POP Pocket Park immediately after school, with judging taking place around 3:30p.m.  Be sure to bring your veggie creation down for judging!  Prizes will be handed out for the Best Veggie Creation, as well as for the Scarecrow Contest — Best Dressed Business/Organization, Household (3 prizes), & Kids (3 prizes).

Over the Thanksgiving Weekend, take your friends and family out for a walk or a drive to take a look at all of the Scarecrow Contest entries.  Scarecrows will remain up until Monday, October 9th.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is pleased to announce the full resumption of 24/7 emergency room (ER) services and acute care admissions at Porcupine Carragana Hospital in Porcupine Plain effective Monday, July 24, 2023, with the hiring of a new physician.  For more information, click here. 

Harold Thorpe is three months short of a 60-year run in the furniture business, but with health concerns and an offer on the building, he (reluctantly) decided to retire his Trolly/Cart.

Harold started in the business on September 26, 1963 at the ripe age of 22 years, working for Al Wiegers at Porcupine Furniture & Appliances in the building currently known as The Sunset Club.  Harold worked under Ed Ryhorski from 1963 until 1965, then moved across the street into the Sarcan building and took over management in 1968. Harold managed Porcupine Furniture & Appliances until he and his wife Lynne purchased Bill Billiards on July 3, 1986, opening the doors of H & L Furniture & Appliances on August 19, 1986. Through the years, Harold has served communities as far North as Hudson Bay down to Kelvington & Rose Valley areas, offering free delivery and installation.

Harold would like to thank the community for the continual support throughout the years and, even up to the last week of his career, he could have sold over a dozen more appliances even though stock was limited! Harold plans to enjoy his retirement keeping his seat warm at Chase Place Arena and at the Ball Diamonds watching his grandchildren play sports.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is pleased to announce the addition of a third physician position in Porcupine Plain. This is part of an overall strategy for stabilizing emergency services in the community. This strategy also includes securing locum coverage where there are temporary gaps in physician coverage, piloting a new Virtual Physician (VP) program, and capitalizing on incentive programs to attract the required staff for stable 24-hour per day emergency coverage.

In April 2023, Don Forbes spotted an “albino” robin in Porcupine Plain. 

The lack of pigment in feathers – called leucism or albinism – seems to occur more often in robins than in most other birds.  However, this finding is still quite rare, with the condition affecting only about one out of every 30,000 robins!  Albino birds completely lack the natural pigment known as melanin; leucistic birds, on the other hand, produce melanin but can’t deposit it into their feathers.  Fully albino robins will also have red or pink eyes, while leucistic birds will still have their normal coloured eyes.  Leucistic birds may even have partial leucism resulting in a “pied” or mottled appearance.

Don Forbes, who has been birdwatching for 80 years, showed the writer an image from the 1970s of a partially white robin.  His finding this spring, however, is his first time spotting a fully white robin!
